moofies are my life.
I know film is often discussed here and there as we shirk away our lives but I think it's time for a proper movie review thread inspired by the ridiculous accent of Mr. Schwarznegger, hence...
Moofies are my life.
Let's begin shall we.
Princess Mononoke.
The 1997 epic by master film maker Hayao Miyazaki is an absolutely beautiful quest into a world of honour, love, greed, and the battle between humanity and the spirits of the forest. The story revolves around a young man who encounters a demon, is expelled from his tribe and sent on a quest to find out how the demon came to be and potentially find a cure for the curse that had been laid on him. However before long he finds himself ebroiled in an ongoing battle between an iron town, which seeks to destroy the forest in order to mine, and the spirit of the forest, which simply aims to preserve itself. The violence and plot line of this film makes it much more of an adult feature than his 2001 masterpiece, ?Spirited away? but still employs an imagination usually only present in the dreams of wild eyed children.
Gripping, poignant and visually magnificent.
9 out of 10 on first viewing. (I reserve the right to change my scores at any time)
keeping on the anime tip.....
My Neighbour Totoro. - Hayao Miyazaki - 1988
Now firstly I should acknowledge that this is essentially a children?s film which is based around two small girls (with occasionally annoying laughter and cries) who move to an old ?enchanted? house with their father. Now this is not to say there aren?t elements which can be greatly enjoyed by adults (because there are many), but the story and dialogue are very simple and some characters are extremely cutesy. However if your able to drop the serious and worn fa?ade that we adults protect ourselves with, then there are some truly magical elements to this movie which could make the most serious of people smile like a child, and this, I believe, is the genius of Miyazaki. There is an imagination at work which is thoroughly captivating and intensely appealing to the inner child which is hopefully still alive somewhere in all of us. A world is created which part of you deeply wishes could be real, even if it?s only for a moment. I recall smiling in a way that cannot be achieved through a witty remark, or a cunning plot, but through a simple and sincere wonderment that reminds you of what it?s like to be a child again.
This is a film that I wish I had have seen as a child as I think its purity, charm and morals encourage the imagination and stir the mind.
Should I ever have children myself, it is definitely a film I will be exposing them to, and if I don?t I?m sure I will get many more viewings from it anyway.
8/10 on first viewing. (I reserve the right to change my scores at any time)
god, how fast can you type and what are you actually supposed to do at work dame?
totoro was definately a cute film but those girls screaming at the start give me chills to this day. love the bit with the cat bus and the umberella bit. mononoke was much more drematic and a fantasty that captured my imagination. I still rate Nausicaa the highest i think. Might have to watch them all again. Recently someone told me they like Porco Rosso the best. Might be worth a re-watch.
Not that quick, really, depends on how fast my brain is working. When ranting I can type quickly.
..and as for my job, I'm essentially a graphic designer who has to think (when I actually get around to working)

shit yeah, that's horrible.
Catbus is awesome. The umbrella part was gorgeous. The dream around the garden bed was one of the most beautful film moments I have ever seen.
Miyazaki is awesome. i haven't seen tororo, but i've seen most of his other creations.
i like Jean-Pierre Jeunet's films. They're easy to watch, but are very well directed.
Yeah, I've only seen a couple of his, City of Lost Children is great and I really must get around to seeing Delicatessen.
Do you have a favourite/ recommendation?
City of Lost Children would have to be my favourite. The rest of his fairy tales aren't so haunting. they all have romantic elements, but A Very Long Engagement was good, also. And everyone loves Amelie. it's a very pleasant (cute) film.
Ya know how as a kid there are movies that you love and reccomend to people as you grow up despote the fact you now haven't seen that film for a while?
Well these are 3 films that I swear used to be good but having seen them in the past fews years I now need to re-asess everything I ever thought.
The Lost Boys
Big Trouble in Little China
3 Amigos
And I remember them being so great!!!
I still haven't seen Amelie. It's been rented by my household, by myself, and is owned by a friend but for some reason it still eludes me.
Note to self: Never fall in love with a girl called Amelie.
Amelie avoided me for years too Daim. Dunno why. But after seeing it I felt all warm and fuzzy inside. An effect that very few films have on me.
Worth buying I reckon.
also, if you really like good foreign film, watch 2046. it's sensational!
i've heard it's reel good

cool, I'll keep an eye out. :)
I was told it was really really slow. While I have been keen to see it, I think every discussion has ended with "its not a film I think you'ld like".
This means either I'll hate it, or people assume I only like films where stuff blows up. Gonna have to check it out methinks.
What was the name of the film that was by the same director and uses the same actors and is kinda an unofficial prequal?
it is pretty slow at the start and somewhat mixed up during the plot, but it paints a very detailed picture/story and makes you think (i appreciate that in movies)
[not sure about the director+actors+prequal thing]
also oldboy was cool. but not as cool nor weird as 2046
I've heard many good things about Oldboy but haven't seen it yet. 2046 sounds interesting. I'll add it to my list.
Yes......Oldboy is very high on my list too. Must get it Friday.
