It was upon seeing the band known as Regurgitator last night at the celebrated Corner Hotel that I came to ponder on two things that I am sure you all have absolutely no interest in.
Firstly, what is the etiquette with a two night stand by a band? Should one see them on the first night because that is when they have the most energy and are more likely to put on a kick-arse show with multiple encores etc.? The brevity of last night's show got me thinking. Still, it was good.
Secondly, given the derivative nature of all music, are all bands simply cover bands of differing quality with actual cover bands being the lowest of the low and top shelf original bands sitting at the top? Or maybe it's the other way around and cover bands are just really honest musicians, whereas 'original' artists are mere scammers who just put their own titles onto songs that have essentially been written before.
Really, who gives a toss, hey?
Firstly, I would go to the first show. The true fans will either be at both or the first show and you want to go with them for the energy that will be produced. You also don't want a band to cancel the second show like what Radiohead did (Hey Nic? Sorry, that was mean).
Secondly, if you believe that the music you are listening to is purely covers with a new name due to the same music arising again and again (which is somewhat true), then I suggest you search a bit harder. While this does apply to many (and maybe most) bands, I challenge you to find bands that use the same melodies as:
King Crimson
The Mars Volta
TOOL (Yes, you knew this one was coming people)
I'm a little lost for more bands right now but I'm sure some people could add to the list.
So I guess I give a toss, but I thank you for encouraging this train of thought. I am still thinking about that cover band argument. :w:
I think they should ban cover songs from being in the charts. Think of all the shit that we could remove from popular music;;;
Lets write a list of all our favourite (sic) pop covers.
Okay
1. Come on Aussie Come on BY Shann Shann
Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm, hahahahahahahaha
But really folks (let's forget I mentioned "the farm"), the master of the Covers has to be Marilyn Manson. And they're all rather enjoyable.
Rock'n'Roll Nigger by Patti Smith
Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode
Golden Years by David Bowie
Tainted Love by Soft Cell (Was this already a cover?)
My Monkey by Charles Manson (Which was also covered by Axl Rose)
I think there's more too. He likes a cover, hey?
Rage against the Machine - the whole Renegades album was excellent and all covers (from recollection) but personal favourites have to include Devo's "It's a beautiful world", and Bob Dylan's "Maggies Farm" (I think that's the title)
Oh... wait a second I forgot my all time greatest cover: Ugly Kid Joe's version of Cat Stevens' masterpiece "Cat's in the cradle"
Oh boy that one was a winner.
A Perfect Circle have recently released an album of war/peace covers called eMOTIVe.
If you like the band, you'll love it. Especially Devo's "Freedon of Choice". What is it about Devo covers?
Oh and not really a cover but more a particular artist:
Robert Downey Jnr singing "I'm Dreaming of a white Christmas"
Oh, and most electronic music..........
OK, not really but to hear Chemical Bros playing and tweaking The Strokes (I said tweak and stroke in the same sentence) was awsome.
When it comes to great covers you can't go past Hendrix doing "all along the watchtower". OK, I like Dylan, but Hendrix blows him out of the water :hb:
While we're on Hendrix: Star Spangled Banner was made a lot more interesting with a liberal dash of acid.
