Whos using Twitter?
Just wondering who on here is actually using twitter? If you are what reasons do you use it for?
It seems to be the runaway social web app for 2009 and unlike my space and face book which have stayed more youth focussed twitter seems to be capturing a much broader user base.
I've noticed it is getting mentioned a lot on ABC tv and radio.
So what are your thoughts?
not me
i use it.
i got the account last year when i went to peru because i knew i couldn't be bothered emailing people and i refuse to use facebook/myspace. it was a convenient because i could update people as to my travel adventures from my phone no matter where i was.
now i find it's a great boredom management strategy as i have something else to go and read when i'm bored at work. i use it to vent my petty daily rage and enjoy reading the random thoughts of my friends throughout the day.
i don't bother following random people and i security lock my updates so only my friends (who i know and talk to in real life) can communicate with me and see what i'm up to/thinking about. it's like a personal forum i guess.
i use it too. used it initially to track software dev posts and the likes, good way to stay on top of technology developments. i think some of the uses are absurd to say the least (ie. that fucking richie hawtin traktor plugin), but it has far more useful purposes than the purely social ones which are the centre of the hype at the moment. (although amusing posts about the minutae of friends' lives are often entertaining)
i think it'd be a decent promo tool actually, especially once the local userbase expands, because you can elect to send and receive updates to and from selected groups via sms. I think its something like 50-100 free received updates per user per month, while sending updates costs the same as a international sms (which is why its also handy for keeping folk updated when overseas, cos you don't need to constantly access a web cafe).
instant updates about an upcoming party, or change of site, focus sent to the phones/pc's of all people following that twitter group, for the cost of one sms makes it a highly useful promotion tool. especially in scenarios where access to a net connection isn't viable.
Cool thanks for the responses some really interesting points. Think I will sign up and check it out once I'm on break.
From what I understand the sms functionality seems to be what's really putting it ahead at the moment.
What's the Hawtin traktor plugin. Do people twitter requests and it programs tarktor?
it automatically updates his twitter feed with the track id's of whatever is currently being played on traktor at his gigs. you can imagine how spammy that'd get in a very short time.
lol yeah found a blog post on it, every 30 seconds might be a bit overkill. Interesting idea though.
